How durable is the Bass Raft and its lightweight construction? How would it handle getting dropped on the highway at 65 mph from 6 feet up? Well, last week I tested that out on my trip to northern Wisconsin to fish with legendary kayak angler Jordan Westerman. Find out the damage done when this Bass Raft fell off the trailer on Highway 51.
Imagine my excitement as a young angler getting to go fishing with Jordan Westerman and seeing him on a Bass Raft. Jordan fishes all year long across the country, but this summer, he’s fishing almost exclusively in the vacation destination of Minocqua, Wisconsin. He says on Facebook, “I spend most of the year working part-time so I can fish full-time!”. So, when I contacted him asking to go fishing in a Bass Raft and he said yes, I was pretty amped.
About two hours into my trip, I glanced back in the rearview mirror just as the Bass Raft on top of my double-decker trailer went sliding off and onto the highway. At first, I saw my whole day of fishing with Jordan going with it. I also visualized my dad’s Garmin Kraken trolling motor getting smashed and me having to buy him a new one.
The long and short of it is this: The Bass Raft handled being dumped from 6 feet onto the highway at 65 mph pretty well. It didn’t flip or roll; it just slid on the floats, so there was minor damage as the skid plates completely wore through but didn’t damage the hull. The impact smashed one of the tail fins pretty badly, and the brackets holding the floats to the deck were slightly damaged, but the trolling motor was totally fine because the raft stayed on the floats and didn’t roll.
After calling my dad and letting him know what happened, I messaged Jordan, and he was okay with us doing a rig swap for part of the day. I fished out of his PA 14, and he fished out of my Bass Raft. Fishing with Jordan was really cool, and I learned a lot from him by just listening and watching. He also had some great things to say about the Bass Raft! Here is a short I took of the aftermath of the drop test.
Overall, I was pretty excited to see how strong and durable the Bass Raft was with that kind of impact at those speeds on the freeway. It’s made out of some strong stuff, and with the Elite 8 program for the first 8 customers, there is no risk for these types of mishaps as I will cover warranty work with the unlimited lifetime warranty!
